How Discord timestamps work

A Discord timestamp is a code like <t:1618953630:d>. The number is a Unix time: the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. The letter after it is the style. Discord shows the moment in the time zone and language of each person who reads it, so a time you set at 9:00 p.m. in New York shows as the right local time for a friend in another time zone.

Without a style (<t:1618953630>), Discord uses the default one, f.

The nine styles

t short time, T medium time (with seconds), d short date, D long date, f long date and short time (the default), F full date with the weekday and short time, s short date and short time, S short date and medium time, and R relative time (“in 3 hours”, “2 days ago”), which updates by itself.

The preview column is made by your browser in your language. Discord formats the timestamp itself, so small differences, like a comma or the word “at”, are possible.

Using it

Pick the date and time, or press Now for the current moment. Press a code to copy it, then paste it in a message, an event description or a server announcement. Below the date you can see the time zone your browser is in: the date and time you enter are read in that zone.

Speed and Reflex is an independent site. It isn't affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Discord.

Frequently asked questions

Which time zone does it use?

Yours: the date and time you enter are read in your browser's time zone, shown below the date. Everyone who reads the message sees it in their own zone.

What's the default style?

f, the long date with the short time. It's the one Discord uses when the code has no style letter.

Why is the number so large?

It's the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 (UTC), the starting point of Unix time.

Does the relative style update?

Yes: Discord shows R timestamps as “in 5 minutes” or “3 days ago” and updates them as time passes.
