Keyboard tester
Click the keyboard below (or move to it with Tab) and press your keys one by one: each key you test lights up. Press Esc to leave.
Your favorites come first on the home page and under the star at the top (in this browser).
While the test is on, keys don't move the page. Press Esc or click outside to stop.
How it works
While the keyboard area is selected, every key you press lights up and stays marked as tested. The page reads the physical key, not the character it types: in the browser, each key has a code by its position, the same whatever your language or layout. On the drawing, the label changes to the character your keyboard actually types, so you can tell the keys apart on a Spanish or French keyboard too.
Below the drawing you see how many keys you've tested, the most keys held down at once and the last key with its code.
ANSI or ISO
Two common physical layouts. The ANSI layout, usual in the United States, has a wide Enter key on one row and a long left Shift. The ISO layout, usual in Europe and Latin America, has a tall Enter key over two rows and one more key, next to a shorter left Shift. Choose the one that looks like yours.
Keys pressed at once
Key rollover is a keyboard's ability to handle several keys pressed at the same time. On some keyboards, certain combinations of three keys make the keyboard report a key you didn't press (ghosting) or miss one you did. Hold several keys and watch how many the page receives: a combination that matters in your games is the one to test.
Keys a web page can't see
Some keys may never reach a web page: Fn is often handled inside the keyboard itself, and your system or browser keeps some keys and shortcuts for itself. If a key doesn't light up, try it in another program before deciding it's broken.
Frequently asked questions
Why doesn't a key light up?
Check that the keyboard area is selected (its border is highlighted). If it is, the key may be one your system keeps for itself, like some shortcuts, or Fn; try it in another program to be sure.
How do I get out of the keyboard area?
Press Esc, or click anywhere outside it. While it's selected, even Tab is tested instead of moving to the next element.
Does it work with any keyboard layout?
Yes: keys are recognized by their position. Choose ANSI or ISO to match the shape of your keyboard; the labels change to what your keys type.
Is what I type recorded?
No. Keys are only shown on the drawing; nothing is saved or sent.
