How the circle is drawn

The circle is laid on a grid as wide as the diameter. A block is inside the circle when its center is within half the diameter of the circle's center. Filled shows every block inside. Thin keeps only the blocks on the edge: those with a side touching the outside. Thick also keeps the ones touching the outside at a corner, which closes the diagonal gaps, so the outline has no holes when you walk along it.

Other generators use slightly different rules, so a block here and there may be in a different place.

Odd or even diameter

With an odd diameter (15, 21, 31…) the circle has a center block, handy for a tower or a fountain. With an even diameter the center falls between four blocks.

Building it

Open Row by row: for each row it gives the columns that have blocks, counted from the left edge of the grid, and how many blocks each run has: “5–11 (7)” is seven blocks from column 5 to column 11. Build it row by row, and count from a fixed corner so you don't lose your place.

Frequently asked questions

What's the largest circle?

255 blocks across. The drawing is scrolled sideways when it's wider than the screen.

Thin or thick?

Thin uses fewer blocks, but in places one block only touches the next at a corner. Thick has no diagonal steps: every block touches the next one by a side.

How many blocks do I need?

The number is shown above the drawing and changes with the diameter and the style.

Can I make a sphere or an oval?

Not with this tool: it draws circles. For a dome you can stack circles of different diameters.
